Limestone and Waterfall

Posted by Lorac Wednesday 23 February 2011

While hiking in the Silver Creek area, I found a mysterious little frozen cave under this cascading waterfall. Perhaps home to the Water Sprites mentioned in yesterdays post!

This is the larger picture of this marvelous little falls, one of many on this creek. The cave, caused by a overhang of the limestone common to the Niagara Escarpment.

I will have to keep an eye on this area. I will keep you posted!

Carrie looked closer at the tiny cave below the waterfall. Catching a glimpse of movement she wondered if the Water Sprites would come out today.

  10. Just the kind of scene I keep hoping to come across, but then, it must have been very cold to create such a frozen little waterfall.

  18. Great photos as usual. Do you think maybe you have discovered the Bat Cave?:-) Thanks for your directions to Silver Creek. I found it on Google maps and will enter it into my GPS.

  20. Martha- We have had some very cold temperatures this winter. This result is due to a melt that we had for a couple of days and then a quick drop in temperature. So the volume in the creek was there ad the temperatures quickly froze it!

nprimopiano -I don't often find caves so I was taken with it!

Marguerite- I admit I am a little jealous of those temperatures right now!

Andy - Do you think? Perhaps I should investigate closer? You are welcome. Let me know how it goes.

  21. Beautiful area to hike and I've not been there in quite a while. Never in winter.
