45 Ducklings All in a Row!

Posted by Lorac Saturday, 23 May 2009

Across the bay from our cottage is the Old Mill Marina where we park our boat , get gas and get essentials at their small store. Last year in this cove there was a mother duck that either is "the most incredible egg layer ever!" or she adopted the ducklings of an ill fated, other mother duck. There are at least 45 ducky's there. Amazing! Just think of this responsibility. As you can see though Mother Duck seems to be up to the challenge and is in fact doing very well.It was hard to get a good shot with the camera I had then, and of course as soon as I got closer they all swam away. Enlarge this picture to see if you can count the ducky's! Nature has a way of taking care of business. Does anyone else have an animal/fowl adoption story? I would love to hear them!

  2. holy moly! 45 really - did she end up with some other mothers babies in the mix to? that is crazy

  4. I think that must be what happened but there was no other duck around so they may have been orphaned. I saw them off and on for a few weeks and she always had that many.

  5. Glennis Says:
  6. She has collected every duck on the lakes duckies. Amazing that she kept them safe and raised them. Out here eels would have got many of them, and black back gulls too I think.
Is that your small float plane?

  8. Thanks for joining in at my blog, nice to have a Canadian.

  10. Wow! I counted 53, but any number over 15 is unusual!

  11. Lorac Says:
  12. Hi Glennis! No that isn't my plane. It is the marina owners plane. Wish it were mine. It would make getting up to the cottage a a lot easier.

  14. Hi Betty. I know! Can you believe it? I have never seen that before. That is one amazing duck!
Glennis: the only thing that might get them here is a big lake trout or a fox on shore.
