Scenic Sunday - Ottawa, Rideau Canal

Posted by Lorac Saturday, 2 January 2010

It is too cold to go for a walk today. -20Celcius. I think I will pull from the archives a photo for Scenic Sunday.

This was a frosty night in Ottawa taken from my motel back door.  I had just arrived after a long drive in a truck from Georgetown pulling a 26 ft trailer. It took about 6 hours. I was in awe of the beauty of the early evening skyline and the sunset!

I have spent quite a bit of time in Ottawa, traveling for my past means of employment. It is a beautiful city and I think the nicest in the winter . Lots of snow and cold enough to freeze the Rideau Canal for skaters. The Rideau Canal in the winter is beautiful. It is frequently used as a means of transport in the winter with people skating to work! It was officially named the world's longest skating rink by the Guiness Book of Records! Imagine being able to skate, sleigh or walk on a 7-kilometre stretch. It is groomed and maintained on a regular basis to make the skating optimal.

This part of the Canal, very near the downtown area has skate rentals shacks. I rented a pair one evening and tried skating after many years off the skates. It was a hoot and I am sure any one watching me felt the same. I did get some great photos though. Hot Chocolate, coffee, Hot dogs and fries can all be found but the best of all is the famous delicacies, Beaver Tails (a delicious pastry) for sale! I posted the recipe awhile back. If you are interested you will find it here.

My hubby is so glad NOT to be traveling for business. It isn't so much fun when you HAVE to.

    Happy New Year.

    P.S. the trains ARE fun!

  29. I used to love to skate. As a kid my best Christmas ever was the year I got my ice skates. Ankles wouldn't hold up today though LOL

  31. That'd be awesome to travel by skating! So much better than going round and round in circles on an ice rick :)

  33. These are terrific photos. I live in the tropics and the only place people can go ice skating is in a mall, obviously man-made. Must be cool to step foot on the longest skating rink. :)
