Weekend Reflections, Scenic Sunday

While taking photos of this beautiful newly refinished steam boat engine I caught both myself and the dock I was standing on in a reflection. Looking right through the windows you can see part of Lake of Bays in Dorset.

I showed this in a post on a newly restored steamship steering cabin a couple of posts back but it is such a multi layer reflection I brought it back in for Weekend Reflections and Scenic Sunday. It is in Dorset, Ontario, a small town which has a big summer home population.

More Weekend Reflections to be seen here! Scenic Sunday has gorgeous pictures the world around! Go see here!

Watery Wednesday on the Lake, Outdoor Wednesday

While taking a boat ride up Kawagama Lake I caught a break through of the sun on a stormy day. Deceiving though, it was actually very warm and muggy but looks cool.

So many wonderful watery views can be found at Watery Wednesday! Thanks to 2sweetnsaxy for hosting this meme! Outdoor Wednesday by A southeren day dreamer here!

I LOVE waterfalls! Natural, man made, whatever. I have always loved the cool rush of the water, the stars flying off the mist as the power of the falls reveals itself. Or it may be the musical trickle as the water from a small falls finds it's way to the lowland. Regardless, I love falls. I have captured a few too many in  my travels that I would like to share with you.

This was found on a back road not far from my place. I had just driven over the bridge. This is known as Silver Creek. An archaic arch, centuries old worn stone in the river bed, that when stepped on, is warm on the soles of the feet.

On the other side of the road, a tinkling falls, one of the quiet ones. A small pool below filled with shades of tan and green.

I walked along, following the creek upstream. I thought I could get some pictures of some running water or wildlife and found this area to be a waterfall paradise. Multi-tiered, it flows gently, with just a whisper.

Changing directions, I went downstream and soon came upon this. The water chimed, a sing song as I walked along the banks of the creek. Water and water sounds calm me, lull me into further investigation.

Further on, another treasure! Leopard frogs jump from the banks into the cool water. The pool has a sand bed and you could see the little minnows swimming about!

Still following this little creek. So lush, so green! Look at the ferns and the moss growing by the waters edge and onto the rocks into the creek.

Silver Creek flows through the land well behind my property but down stream it comes out just down the road. The people who live close by have built up little water falls. In the pools are silvery minnows and lots of little green leopard frogs. None of them would oblige with a picture! I have seen a muskrat running along the banks as well. I drive past here almost every day and have seen it gently making its way to Lake Ontario, peaceful on a summers day or raging down stream, swollen and tipping over the banks with the spring melt of ice and snow.

This is a beautiful little river I found while I was just out backroading. I have never been able to find it again. I spent a few hours here following the stream and getting photos. I would love to go back! If any one recognizes it, let me know! It is north west of Georgetown and on the Escarpment.
It was a noisy river with a few smaller water falls as well. It opened up down river into a large pool. Look at the stone.Typical limestone of the escarpment. Much of this limestone has gone all over Ontario to build Parliament buildings, churches and houses.

Long shot of the same falls

This is in the town of St Mary's in southern Ontario. I spent a lot of time there, working and fell in love with the quaint little town. This is a huge river called the Thames River It flows west 273Kilometres (169 miles) through southwestern Ontario and  runs right through town.
This one, just outside of Bracebridge, is known as High Falls.

One of many Hollow River falls outside of Dorset, Ontario

Also Hollow River

Just a few for you to see! Hope you enjoy them as I do! To view a magnificent falls go into the archives and look for Kakabeka Falls.

Thoughts.Actions. Musings.

I really can't wait!  So... I decided to write so I can at least think about it! The first weekend trip to the cottage after a cold bleak winter. "WE" as in the family, have to wait for the ice to go out on the lake as the only way to the cottage is by the lake. In fact the first trip is by water taxi from the marina as our boat is on shore at the cottage. The first trip will be to put on the water (shut off for the winter), put in the boats, clean up all the leaves and sticks from the winter and likely cut the grass, dust the cottage and.. What?

Ok, so now you are thinking "What is she raving about?"It sounds like a lot of work. It is... but it is work I actually enjoy. As I listen to loons call for rain, as the sweet smelling wind blows around my head with last years leaves as I rake. The outdoor fire pit  has a small fire going to burn the twigs and leaves, the temperature is just right for working outdoors. I don't even mind if it is raining a little.

I will stay outside because it clears my mind. Not just being outside but the whole cottage experience. It makes me feel so relaxed, so at ease, so at home. I sleep like the proverbial log here ( as my kids will tell you by the snoring they swear I do!) Food tastes better, even making meals is more fun.

Our cottage is nothing fancy, we have the basic amenities. The cottage does not have life clutter. By that I mean it is a simpler existence. None of the usual things that  clutter the mind at home. We have a phone but only family and the closest of friends have the number. It rarely rings. We have electricity but can live without between the fireplace, the Barbeque and the outside fire pit. To go to the store you have to take a boat and then a car ride so you only go if absolutely necessary, in most cases it is for fun on a Saturday afternoon.

There are bonfires every weekend night, with marshmallows for the grandkids and something a little stronger for the adults. We watch for shooting stars as there are so many stars to see in the night sky up north! I know exactly when you can see the satellites go by and will point them out to anyone still left by the fire. ( they are rather late at night) The doggies like to lay by their owners and get some warmth from the fire too and there is always the hope that an errant spider dog (Split up hot dog) might fall on the ground to be edible to only the dogs now.

My Father, who passed away a few years ago, is  in the bank of dirt leading up to the cottage or at least his ashes are. So I never fail to say "Hi Dad" when I first arrive and "Bye Dad "when I leave. Makes me feel close to him still. He loved the cottage. I think he watches over us.

There are actually two cottages at this site but two different parcels of land. My Dad bought the first parcel right after the war and built the original cottage in 1964 for his family of four. A few years later he bought the parcel next door and later built a smaller cottage on this for himself and my Mom. My Mom still comes up to the cottage at 84 yeasrs of age. Since there are two cottages she gets a break from the kids, grandkids and great grandkids.
