Praying Mantis-Ready to lay eggs.

Posted by Lorac Sunday, 16 September 2012 12 comments

Found this little beauty on the garage. A female Praying Mantis with her belly swollen with eggs and in labour. You can see the thorax pulsing. Lots of little Praying Mantis for next year.

This is the back view. She seemed to be getting the sun. It has been cooler and it was wonderful in the sun.

These are great to help keep the mosquitoes and other bugs down. I encourage them to habitat.

SkyWatch Friday

The skies over Lake Ontario in November! Very chilly~ but lovely to look at!

Many more interesting skies at SkyWatch Friday!

I love going to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron! The water, colour, and scenery never cease to thrill me!

Today the lakefront was the busiest I have seen it due to the long weekend, but we walked along the waterfront and found a fairly secluded spot due in part to climbing a couple of rock cliffs some were reluctant to go over. This  is part of the Niagara Escarpment and the whole area is made up of limestone. The nature of limestone is to fracture into plates and  this is what you see along the shoreline. Different depths all surrounded by limestone rock. A shallow area like this can suddenly drop off into an abyss 50 feet deep or more.

It certainly provides for extremely interesting and really fun swimming areas.  Today the water was very cold so it took awhile to get in but once in you were so frozen you failed to notice how cold it was! This was probably the coldest I have experienced there. The day was hot so the water was inviting regardless!

My 7 year old grandaughter was loving it! Quite different from the family pool and lots more fun to explore.

The wonderful aquas, blues and greens come from the reflection of the sun on the white limestone under water.

Son and grandaughters. You took your swims briefly in this water with lots of time for warming up in between!
My older grandaughter, daughter in law and I take to the heights for a better view.

A wildflower tenaciously clings to life in the crevasse  in the limestone. A deep hole through the stone shows water many feet below.

We arrived at 2:30 pm and left just after 8:00 pm. This is the veiw going over the cliffs on the way back. At the stone beachbeyond there is a trail through the bush back to the car. About a 20 min hike through the bush. Adieu, Georgian Bay. Until another day!

Watery Wednesday on the Lake, Outdoor Wednesday

While taking a boat ride up Kawagama Lake I caught a break through of the sun on a stormy day. Deceiving though, it was actually very warm and muggy but looks cool.

So many wonderful watery views can be found at Watery Wednesday! Thanks to 2sweetnsaxy for hosting this meme! Outdoor Wednesday by A southeren day dreamer here!

Watery Wednesday

As we see the significant weather changes here in Ontario with the beginnings of spring, we realize that it won't be long until we see the fresh green leaves decorating the trees. This picture is only a photo of things to come but soon will be reality!

SkyWatch Friday - Lighthouse

Skywatch Friday

This lighthouse stands at the entrance to the 16 Mile Creek harbour in Oakville, Ontario. In the 1960s an automated lighthouse was placed at the end of the pier, replacing a seventy year old wooden lighthouse which was moved and preserved.

The colour contrast attracted me to this shot.  I saw the sunlight reflected on the red top and against the blue-grey sky it caught my eye. Nice to see it is run on solar power.

The pier on which the lighthouse stands in Lake Ontario. I was a bit shocked to see that there was only one life ring on the whole pier. It was attached to a rope on the post. Heaven forbid anyone fall in other than right at that spot! Much warmer here than in my town which is about 45 minutes north. It felt balmy at +5 degrees Celsius! The sun was warm on the face and the winds were slight. I could almost feel spring in the air!

There are great skies from all over the world at the SkyWatch Friday site. Do go and have a look! Many thanks to:

There is such a wonderful feeling when I see a small glimpse of the wildlife right in my back yard. This handsome young buck was feeding off the frozen apples under the tree. It was a very misty day and they seem to feel protected in that kind of weather and will travel out into the  open more. I had to take these through my kitchen window or he would have been spooked. He is a young buck with small antlers, three points, but he was a big-un! He fed for awhile and finally , just before dark set in, wandered back into the bush.

Every time I have seen deer in the back yard it has been a good omen. I wonder what this one will bring?

Watery Wednesday: Beaver in the Lock

Watery Wednesday

I have often gone to Lindsay, Ontario to give training  to the hydro company. Always with a camera in hand, I thought that the way the town" pretties up" the old locks with flower pots was a great idea. They are at the front and at the back of the old lock.

While taking a pic of flower pots I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. I moved to the side and looking a little closer I saw a lone beaver. Busy little guy, he was swimming all around and seemed quite happy. If you can enlarge the pics, do so. In the second one you can see the beavers flat tail and webbed feet that help him swim. so well.

He blends right into the water. If it wasn't for the little bit of movement I would have missed him entirely.

Go see other great pics and posts at Watery Wednesday!

Formula 1 Race Car Driving !!!!

Posted by Lorac Saturday, 12 September 2009 6 comments

Last Tuesday I was invited by my son to go race car driving. My first reaction was glee, then fear, then awe and back to glee! His company puts this on as a team and client building event twice a year and they had a couple of spots open.  Hence the invite. He thought I might enjoy it.  So after a lot of questions: 1) How fast do you have to go? 2) Where is it? 3) Do I have to drive fast? 4) Do you think I can do this? I thought it would be pretty cool to give it the old college try!   When you arrive they fit you with a race suit and shoes, little booties shoes. The gentlemen running the races go through a ton of instructions. I was hoping I was retaining it all as I was hearing words like "huge ditches off to the sides", "spinning out", and "an injury in the spring of this year". The gentleman going through the instruction makes it very clear that after a minor accident last spring, it is very important to stay on the track! They go through the different flags they use in course and rules of driving.

You are then taken out on the track for a van ride with one of the organizers and an experienced race car driver. They go through the track shape and the markers explaining the meanings. When to brake, shifting down on a curve, and excelleration areas.
Now this was scary! The driver actually goes through the track as if he was in a race car. Speeding up, slamming on the brakes and skidding around corners. It was also a hoot! I loved it but was very glad I buckled up!
After that you are taken over to a tented area which houses one of the ormula1 cars. Here each is given instruction on getting in and out of the cars, (pretty tight fit), how to use the shifter, clutch and brakes. It is such  a small area for your feet that they tend to hit the wrong peddles rather easily. I was glad I have much smaller feet than the guys there. Some of those guys had size 12's!

There was some concern about the foggy morning  but as we were being given instruction it began clearing so all was well. This is set up in a huge paved area so at least it is nice and flat. The courses have a series of "s" curves and a nice straightaway to pick up some good speed. Every one has a drivers slot for racing so depending on you allocation you either go get a coffee after instruction or get you helmet on and get ready to roll. There are four cars set up and I was listed as #3 driver so I got my helmet on and went to the 3rd car. The assistant helps you into the car and buckles you in quite tightly! They make sure your feet can reach the peddles and that you are OK with shifting. The car is plugged in, the car placed in first gear (no neutral) and the assistant starts the car. Give it some gas, follow your track pylons and away you go..........!
My son loves this! He is at the ready and he really flies when he gets out there. I watched him spin around on the track and he ended up in the top 4 for the "cat and mouse" race at the end.

The fog has lifted so you can see the whole track now.

And soon it is a beautiful sunny day! One of the nicer days we have seen in this summer of naught.
The crew are always at the ready to rush out to the field to help if needed and to replace pylons when they are hit by the drivers. Some pylons went flying high! The rear wheels are wider than the rest of the car so if you cut the corners tight, as you need to to get a good time, you can easily hit them. You can see the different flags used to tell tell which laps you are on and when your race is finished of course you get the checkered flag!
Coming into the finish!
As the morning went on the races were timed and the drivers were picked for the final race amongst the fastest drivers. I, unfortunately did not make it into that prestigious circle.

The guys really poured on the speed for the final laps!
1st and 2nd place in the winners circle! Way to go guys!
This was a great day. I really had a blast. I was not the fastest driver there but was more than fast enough for my own comfort zone and then some. No I know the way it works and have confidence in the cars I would push it further as I did in my final laps. I would love to go again and I thank my son and my sons company, Digitaledge Print and Promotion for this wonderfully fun day!

What is that?

SkyWatch Friday!

SkyWatch Friday

I have always stated my fondness for reflections before. It's like getting two pictures in one!  This was taken in Belleville, Ontario. They have done a massive amount of work at the water front on the river.

Emerald lily pads look like they are awaiting the gift of a " Frog Prince". Cool grey limestone, cut from a local quarry, reflects beside the pale blue of the evening sky.

This was taken in Holland. I liked the loneliness of the deserted out door cafe. A surprise rain had swept through leaving the air chilly and damp. Everyone moved inside to enjoy the display of the setting sun .

I traveled all over Canada in my past employment. I consulted at many Cement Plants. Dirty, dusty places, all of them. One plant in particular had made a point of trying to look attractive on the outside. As you drove into the plant which was built in an old limestone quarry, they had built the road around two little lakes that had been born when the quarry flooded. The lakes were clean and clear looking and definitely inviting to look at. Especially when your option was the plant behind it.  These swans were actually owned by the company. Every winter the would go into a warm hut and were brought back out in the spring. They would socialize with the geese, ducks and other waterfowl that would  come to mate and nest. Swans mate for life.

Here the reflection of the plant in one part of the lake. You can see the lime stone cliffs all around. They colour of the day here is always grey.

Sitting out on a warm rock in the middle of a forest with a musical river below and you have the recipe for peace.

So it is Friday once again! This summer is just flying by and we have hardly seen any summer. Now the readers out there are probably getting tired of my bellyaching about all the rain and cooler (about 10-15 degrees Celsius cooler) than normal temperatures but we live in a climate where we don't see a lot of warmth, only for 4-5 months of the year, May, June, July, and August. September can be warm but no guarantees there and the way things are going this year I rather doubt it. So you see summer is almost gone and 80% was wet and cool. Soon the winds will be colder, the snow will start to fly and cover my world in white. Well, in late October, early November the snow will begin. But that is too soon when we don't have a scorching hot summer to complain about and wish for a little coolness in out lives! C'est le vie! Such is Life!So to at least celebrate life I bring you SkyWatch Friday Photos!

This is an old mill in Rockwood, a town not far from here. On a spring walk I noticed the very blue sky that day is reflected in the water. Coupled with the bleached white of the old limestone and the green lawn behind I found this quite attractive.
The Town of St. Mary's is a striking little town full of beautiful old stone homes and buildings. This limestone structure across the water and the reflection of it in the water caught my eye. It was a beautiful day and the blue green waters were still.

I taught courses all over Canada. This motel I was staying at which was out in the country, had lovely grounds. I love the making of stars in the water and the clouds seemed to center just right for me to take a pic!

While driving down a back country road this scene stopped me in my tracks. I just had to get a photo of the proverbial white picket fence.

It has been a bad year for farmers trying to get a couple of dry days in a row to harvest hay and straw for the animals.

This was taken on one of my many forays out into the country back roads . This is called Grand View Rd. I think it is obvious why! This a view of Toronto from afar. If you enlarge it you can see the CN Tower in the city.

Very soon here it will be Autumn. I took this last year while walking in the forest. The sky is reflected in the water and the shadow of the small tree above shows the colourful fall leaves already fallen

Following closely behind will be winter with skies so blue after blanketing us with snow!

Brr.... I think I will end on that note and head on outside. Although a cooler summer it is still a lot warmer that that! Not much time left to enjoy. Please go to SkyWatch Friday Blog to see other wonderful posts and hosts!

Seeds of Thought

One of my favorite things about the north country are the Birch trees in the forests and at the cottage. There are Paper Birch, Yellow Birch and Silver Birch, all beautiful, but my favorites are the stark white Paper Birch. I am cheating today as these are not my pictures but the poem is. Today I need to focus on too many things and so need to be absent , somewhat,  from the web. I will look in later to see your comments, good or bad! I hope you enjoy "Seeds of Thought"
Seeds of Thought

Through the leaves,
Just like a jewel,
Shining bright,
Emerald cool

 As I walk,
The elusive sun,
Enlightens a web,
Silver spun

At my feet,
A fern unfurled,
The tip as yet,
Tightly curled

Across my face,
A feathers blown,
I see the bird,
From whence it's flown

My hand caresses,
Smooth white bark,
A woodpecker,
Has left it's mark

I turn to go,
I hate to leave,
Through the cool glade,
My footsteps weave.
