Weekend Reflections

Posted by Lorac Friday, 8 June 2012 16 comments

This is a triple reflection of old buildings in the window of a beautifully restored boat (The Bigwin) sitting in the channel in Dorset Ontario. Looking in at the helm there is a refashioned steering wheel. The background shows buildings off to the side and a second set of buildings across the narrows of which it sits.(middle left). You can see the new mahogany used on the cabin enclosure.

Bruce Trail Walk

Posted by Lorac Monday, 18 October 2010 17 comments

I walked a 5 KLM (3.5miles) walk yesterday. I have walked this Bruce Trail before but never in the fall. Although many of the colourful leaves are already on the ground it is still incredibly beautiful in the woods. If possible enlarge these pics. You will be glad you did. I started up this trail and instantly the wonderful smell of the woods in autumn flooded my senses. It is a sweet smell of the fallen leaves and damp earth. Better than cookies fresh from the oven!

Not far along I saw a pond off the trail and further into the woods. I couldn't see this in the summer but could now the leaves have fallen. The top of the pond is laden with colourful fallen leaves.

We get a lot of rain in the fall and therefore a lot of fungi grow. These are all wood fungi that grow on dead wood.

Thi sI know is called Conch Fungi.

I have never seen this type of fungus before. It looks like a waterfall flash frozen. If you can, enlargen this. It really is something to see.

Who could resist walking up along the  length of this log? I couldn't!

I came across this large dead maple...I followed trunk up and was entranced with this colour.

There are stiles to cross fences and wet areas along the way.

Not all areas in the forest are deciduous. There are lots of areas predominately evergreen too.

The fall started with wet cool weather. Summer ended abruptly but the last week has been great. Around 15 Celcius and lots of sunshine.

The sun was caught bathing in this shallow creek.

These trails are well taken care of by the Bruce Trail Foundation and volunteers. Walkways have been built over wet areas to allow dry passage.

Come visit again tomorrow! There is more to this walk.

SkyWatch Friday

The skies here have been rather uneventful these last couple of weeks. Not that it hasn't been sunny the last week, it has! Just haven't been any where so nothing to see. I went into the archives and pulled out this pic from when I was in Holland visiting a friend. I had arrived that morning, was jet lagged and decided I needed a walk to clear my head. I couldn't believe my luck when I saw this!

The building where all the windows are reflecting the gorgeous blue of the sky which is once again reflected in the canal water! To top it all off, amidst it all is a quaint little  green skiff!

This pastel pink sky reflected in the lake looks warm and the baby blue bottom of the sky blankets the land.

SkyWatch Friday
I was bored and had a few hours, so off I went for a drive. I came across this lovely little lake on a back road and drove past it. Then, it registered how lovely the sky looked, in it's pale autumn blue and how wonderfully the water shimmered with light! I turned around and got the photo.

All that follow or read my posts probably now by now that I love reflections! Here the blue sky is displayed only by the water although the sky itself looks dull.

There is an amazing site to visit to see more SkyWatch Friday posts. Go visit all the wonderful skies the world over!

Autumn Reflections

I must admit I love the fall colours and the fall celebrations but not the way it is turning so cold so fast! It has been an extraordinary year for weather and I think we are going to be hit with a long cold wet winter.

This picture has it all. The building storm clouds, the lake and the gorgeous fall colour!

In the evening it can be so calm. Nothing to be heard but the cry of the loons, a few cottagers around a campfire in the chill night and our own breathing.
In the early morning it is once again so tranquil! Not one leaf was stirring , not a sound was coming to me other than my own footsteps as I walked and took in this misty morning.

TaDa! SkyWatch Friday!

So it is Friday once again! This summer is just flying by and we have hardly seen any summer. Now the readers out there are probably getting tired of my bellyaching about all the rain and cooler (about 10-15 degrees Celsius cooler) than normal temperatures but we live in a climate where we don't see a lot of warmth, only for 4-5 months of the year, May, June, July, and August. September can be warm but no guarantees there and the way things are going this year I rather doubt it. So you see summer is almost gone and 80% was wet and cool. Soon the winds will be colder, the snow will start to fly and cover my world in white. Well, in late October, early November the snow will begin. But that is too soon when we don't have a scorching hot summer to complain about and wish for a little coolness in out lives! C'est le vie! Such is Life!So to at least celebrate life I bring you SkyWatch Friday Photos!

This is an old mill in Rockwood, a town not far from here. On a spring walk I noticed the very blue sky that day is reflected in the water. Coupled with the bleached white of the old limestone and the green lawn behind I found this quite attractive.
The Town of St. Mary's is a striking little town full of beautiful old stone homes and buildings. This limestone structure across the water and the reflection of it in the water caught my eye. It was a beautiful day and the blue green waters were still.

I taught courses all over Canada. This motel I was staying at which was out in the country, had lovely grounds. I love the making of stars in the water and the clouds seemed to center just right for me to take a pic!

While driving down a back country road this scene stopped me in my tracks. I just had to get a photo of the proverbial white picket fence.

It has been a bad year for farmers trying to get a couple of dry days in a row to harvest hay and straw for the animals.

This was taken on one of my many forays out into the country back roads . This is called Grand View Rd. I think it is obvious why! This a view of Toronto from afar. If you enlarge it you can see the CN Tower in the city.

Very soon here it will be Autumn. I took this last year while walking in the forest. The sky is reflected in the water and the shadow of the small tree above shows the colourful fall leaves already fallen

Following closely behind will be winter with skies so blue after blanketing us with snow!

Brr.... I think I will end on that note and head on outside. Although a cooler summer it is still a lot warmer that that! Not much time left to enjoy. Please go to SkyWatch Friday Blog to see other wonderful posts and hosts!
